MARRIED OCTOBER 2ND, 2015
Sean and I met at a pub one night while I was out for a friend’s birthday. I was standing at the bar when he walked over, trying to be all smooth and charming, and asked to buy me a drink. When I told him I’d have a Tom Collins, the bartender wasn’t quite sure how to make it, and to be honest, neither was I! And that’s where our story started.
On our one year anniversary, Sean and I spent a romantic weekend away at Arrowhead Provincial Park, just North of Huntsville. It was such a perfect weekend, filled with ski excursions, bonfires in the snow, and hot chocolate. Most memorable of all was ice skating on an outdoor rink in the middle of the forest, surrounded by little tiki torches. On our second night there, we went for a walk, and I remember thinking to myself what a beautiful spot this would be for a marriage proposal. The snowflakes fell perfectly in my hair, the scenery was spectacular, and then all of a sudden, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I mean, I had definitely been hoping for a proposal in the near future, but with no real expectations, I wasn’t sure when or where he might pop the question. Being the romantic guy that Sean is, I knew he would knock me off my feet when the engagement came, and the moment couldn’t have been more perfect!
When it came time to choosing a wedding venue, Sean and I had looked at a few different locations in Cambridge and Kitchener, before visiting the St. Marys Golf and Country Club. Everywhere we looked, we never got that special feeling. But as soon as we walked into the Country Club building, we knew right away that this is where we wanted our wedding to be. I was looking for something that felt natural and bright, and the venue offered all of that and so much more. Their Banquet Hall has stunning floor to ceiling windows that offer natural lighting, and they’ve finished the space in warm champagne tones. To top it off, the room looks directly onto their beautiful grounds, so for our early October wedding, we knew the views would be especially breath-taking!
And then there was Ashton, the Wedding Planner at the Country Club. She was absolutely amazing. Phenomenal is actually the best word to describe her! She really becomes one of your best friends throughout the whole wedding planning process. Honestly, Ashton was like one of my bridesmaids, except that she doesn’t get to wear a bridesmaid dress or stand beside you in your wedding party. I could always contact her with any question, and she would get back to me right away with an honest opinion that I knew I could trust. Having her support throughout the planning process really made me feel care-free for the nine months leading up to our wedding, and then especially on the day of.
On the day of our wedding, it was a bit colder than we had anticipated for an outdoor ceremony in early October, but even with the chilly weather, our special day was nothing less than extraordinary! Sean and I came in the night before to do a little decorating, and then when I walked in on our wedding day, it was more than I had imagined. The Head Table was setup perfectly, with a gorgeous blush sequin linen and the one-of-a-kind Bride and Groom chairs that the Country Club provides. The whole room looked absolutely stunning! There were so many small unexpected details that Ashton thought of that really put the finishing touch on our décor, and even in the Bridal Suite. She really made me feel so special with all of the personalized touches, and for the way that she went above and beyond just for Sean and I! When it came to our ceremony and reception, everything ran flawlessly. Honestly, Sean and I still talk with our friends about how easy everything felt, and how there wasn’t one thing we can think of that went wrong.
Sean and I had our wedding photos taken during cocktail hour, and Ashton made sure that we got the most out of our photo session by giving suggestions for places to shoot on and off the golf course. Even though the weather was a little chilly, our photographer made it look as if our pictures were taken in the warm sunshine. We couldn’t have asked for a better collection of photos.
The Chef at the Country Club was incredibly friendly and his food was amazing! Sean and I particularly remember enjoying the delicious roasted potatoes and stuffed chicken. After dinner, came my favourite memory from the whole day. During our newlywed speech, we asked one guest from each table to come to the front of the room and hold up a big piece of paper. Once everyone had lined up, we asked them to turn around their papers at the same time, and the letters spelled out: Expecting Baby Eagle 2016! I was three months pregnant with our son! Most people were crying, many were clapping and hugging us, and some were even mad that we’d tricked them! It was so much fun, and we will never forget that moment.
At the end of the day, I never could have pictured my wedding to turn out as perfectly as it did. There was absolutely no stress, the planning process was so easy, and Sean, my family and Ashton were always there to help. I’m definitely not one to call myself a princess, but on my wedding day, that’s truly how I felt! Sean and I look back on that magical day and honestly wish we could re-live it. And if we ever had the chance to do it all over again, we wouldn’t change one thing!
